Spring Cleaning for Apartment Living

Cleaning out your home when the weather starts to get warm is a time-honored tradition.  If you live in an apartment, however, it’s easy to feel left out of this annual ritual.  Fortunately, there are a number of ways that people living in apartments can participate in spring cleaning.  Follow these tips to get your apartment looking great.

  • Clean your carpets.  Over time, particles of food and dust get trapped in the carpet.  This dirt creates odors, making your entire apartment smell like wet dog, cigarette smoke, or burnt food.  Air freshener sprays can only mask the odor, and vacuuming can’t remove all of the particles.  To get rid of the smells, have your carpets steam cleaned.  Not only will your home smell better, but it will be healthier too.
  • Go through closets and cabinets and remove any items that you haven’t used or worn in a year.  If you haven’t used it in that long, then you probably won’t use it again in the future.  Donate these items to a local charity and be sure to get a receipt to deduct the value of these items from your taxes.  You’ll probably make as much back on your next refund as you would have if you had a yard sale, and you’ll be helping some less fortunate people.  Even better, you’ll free up a lot of space in your apartment.
  • Make your own cleaning products.  Store-bought cleaners can contain some really harsh chemicals, and they can cost a lot of money.  Instead, learn how to make your own cleaners with natural products.  Start by making an all-purpose cleaning spray by combining water, lemon juice, and baking soda in a spray bottle.  Use this to clean counters, bathtubs, or any other hard surface.
  • Clean your front door.  Even though it’s a part of your home that you constantly use, no one ever thinks to clean their front door.  This is a part of your home that guests look at frequently—as they wait for you to find your keys or wait to be left in.  Use your all-purpose cleaner on the door itself, then clean the surrounding door frame.

Spring Cleaning is a great tradition for people living in all types of homes.  Dedicating a part of the year to cleaning and sanitizing your living space will improve both your physical and mental health.  Start with these steps, then move on to cleaning the rest of the items in your home.
